<p>The <i>History</i> of the Armenian priest Łewond is an important
source for the history of early Islamic rule and the only contemporary
chronicle of second/eighth-century caliphal rule in Armenia. This volume
presents a diplomatic edition and new English translation of Łewond’s
text, which describes events that took place during the century and a
half following the Prophet Muḥammad’s death in AH 11/632 CE. The authors
address Łewond’s account as a work of caliphal history, written in
Armenian, from within the Caliphate. As such, this book provides a
critical reading of the Caliphate from one of its most significant
provinces. Reading notes clarify many aspects of the period covered to
make the text understandable to students and specialists alike.
Extensive commentary elucidates Łewond’s narrative objectives and
situates his <i>History</i> in a broader Near Eastern historiographical
context by bringing the text into new conversations with a constellation
of Arabic, Greek, and Syriac works that cover the same period. The book
thus stresses the multiplicity of voices operating in the Caliphate in
this pivotal period of Near Eastern history. <br /></p></blockquote></div>Chuck Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12882192031767315365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4914251619715378408.post-25119843051297869332024-03-06T14:49:00.007-05:002024-03-06T14:52:45.807-05:00Syriac Manuscripts in the British Library: A New Digital Edition of Wright’s Catalogue<p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://bl.syriac.uk/index.html" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="840" data-original-width="647" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixrVWam-zyZYuIU83n2PzsXiGfZua6aFWDVCRs9Nvvjx3BOI4RLaeGMzhfCmLT1zmASgNdIGMU5tqeTfo8ajUJhPcz-pxNsmx1TpJ8cwTfWR-_YJfzuu7hLpDRlRCAtHczmWstTG9w2Jbnf7NBnz_qyEevbD2psBj3QxYRdH0ZkYFd1DJHDOXXp6hk0eI/s320/wright-catalogue-title-page.jpg" width="246" /></a></div><p><a href="https://bl.syriac.uk/index.html">Syriac Manuscripts in the British Library: A New Digital Edition of Wright’s Catalogue</a></p><p>Editors: David A. <p><span style="font-size: small;"><a data-id="3401" data-type="attachment" href="https://librarianswithpalestine.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/LAP-Gaza-Report-2024.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Download a PDF of the report here</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The destruction of cultural heritage in Gaza impoverishes the
collective identity of the Palestinian people, irrevocably denies them
their history, and violates their sovereignty. In this report, we offer a
partial list of archives, libraries, and museums in Gaza that have been
destroyed, damaged, or looted by Israeli armed forces since October 7,
2023. This report is necessarily incomplete. It is very difficult to
determine the status of archives, libraries, and museums in Gaza during
the ongoing Israeli bombardment. Current conditions in Gaza, such as the
targeting of journalists, frequent communication blackouts, and
extensive damage to the built environment pose an immediate threat to
safety. Moreover, archivists and librarians have been repeatedly
displaced, injured, or killed, making it even more difficult to take
stock of the damage to cultural heritage. As a result, it should be
assumed that this report represents only a fraction of the extent of
damage and death, not a complete picture.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">We compile and offer this information with the understanding that the
erasure of Palestinian culture and history has long been an Israeli
tactic of war and occupation, a means to further limit the
self-determination of the Palestinian people. In 1948, during the Nakba,
30,000 books and manuscripts were <a href="https://www.palestine-studies.org/en/node/78440">looted from Palestinian homes</a>; in 1982, during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, Israel <a href="https://palestinianstudies.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/sleiman-2016-the-paper-trail-of-a-liberation-movement.pdf">looted and confiscated the library and archives of the Palestine Liberation Organization</a>; libraries and archives were <a href="http://www.progressivelibrariansguild.org/PL/PL21/049.pdf">damaged during the Second Intifada</a>, and have been <a href="https://www.arabnews.com/node/2390636/middle-east">repeatedly targeted</a> in Gaza. Furthermore, the intentional destruction of cultural heritage has been <a href="https://www.getty.edu/publications/cultural-heritage-mass-atrocities/part-4/25-powderly/">recognized as a war crime</a> and prosecuted in the International Criminal Court.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">This report joins those issued by <a href="https://www.heritageforpeace.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Report-of-the-effects-of-the-last-war-of-2023-on-the-cultural-heritage-in-Gaza-Strip-Palestine-english.pdf">Heritage for Peace</a> (November 7, 2023), the <a href="https://arablit.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/English-.pdf">Palestinian Ministry of Culture</a> (December 6, 2023), the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/15rdQo1nrmcSWaBwB21cWbRZPKNPBp8P6/view">Arab Regional Group at the International Council of Monuments and Sites</a>
(January 9, 2024), and others. These reports document the destruction
of religious sites, archaeological evidence, cultural institutions, and
more. We bring a focus on libraries, archives, and museums as sites of
knowledge, community spaces, and repositories of cultural heritage.
Irreplaceable historic materials have been lost in the destruction of
institutions such as the Central Archives of Gaza City and the Rafah
Museum. The destruction of libraries represents the loss of not only
book collections, but the efforts of Gaza’s librarians to acquire, care
for, and provide access to reading materials, despite Israel’s ongoing
blockade of the Gaza Strip. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Finally, we include information about the librarians and archivists
who have been killed in the ongoing Israeli bombardment. We mourn the
deaths of our colleagues and their families.</span></p>

in Arabic manuscript cultures</span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-bidi; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-bidi;">Audition certificates (<span dir="RTL" lang="AR-SA">سماع, طبقة السماع</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span> or <span dir="RTL" lang="AR-SA">إجازة</span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span><span dir="LTR"></span>) are a salient feature of Arabic
manuscript cultures. They are notes written on a book to document the
authorised transmission of the book’s text from teacher(s) to student(s). In
concrete terms, the text was read out aloud (by the teacher or one of the
students) and at the end of the reading session one of the members of this
reading group added the audition certificate to the book. By virtue of their
participation all students now had the right to act as teacher in future
reading sessions.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Audition certificates are brimming
with data and can include: the name of the teacher(s), the name of the
student(s) (including highlighting those coming late or leaving early), the
name of the reader, the name of the writer of the certificate, the name of the
book’s owner, the date of the reading, the place of the reading and many other
surprises (such as a writer recording the birth of his son during the reading
session in the room next door). These certificates contain a wealth of
historical data, in particular on persons we do not find in many other sources
such as women and slaves. They are thus a source of outstanding importance for
fields such as social history, history of ideas, economic history, urban
history, historical topography, and biographical studies. It goes without
saying that, especially in a comparative perspective with other world regions,
such as Latin Europe, this copious material represents a considerable resource
for widening our understanding of Middle Eastern societies. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">So far, the field of Middle Eastern
history has used this unparalleled source for medieval history only for
individual manuscripts or small corpora. The problem is simply that audition
certificates are distributed in tens of thousands of manuscripts around the
globe and that no systematic project to make them available was ever started.
The farthest we got was a collaborative project between German and Syrian
colleagues who published in facsimile a selection of certificates from the
National Syrian Library in Damascus and provided them with an enormous index:</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">ACP is the first major project aimed
at unlocking the potential of this unique source corpus. We have started
to go through the holdings of selected libraries (Staatsbibliothek Berlin,
Forschungsbibliothek Gotha, The Bibliothèque nationale de France, Syrian
National Library), but we cannot claim to have identified all audition
certificates in the manuscript books on their shelves. We will continue to go
through further collections to enlarge this first large-scale and fully
searchable corpus of audition certificates. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">The data set underlying ACP is available

Following an introduction on the course, its scope and aims, it showcases the four proposals that the participants of the Industrial Heritage for Sustainable Cities Course developed for the transformation of the Unkapanı Flour Mill. The proposals are original, thought-provoking and inspirational, while at the same time based on solid multi-disciplinary, collaborative work. So, they are perfect demonstrations of what NIT Urban Heritage Lab tries to achieve.<br /><br />Cite as:<br /><br />Gerritsen, Fokke, Özçakır, Özgün, Arslan, Aysel, Kayasü, Sena, Yurdagül, Sedef. Correlations and Collocation Frequencies, is to present key data related
to the lexicon of the Quran, in terms of Key Word distribution and
lexical associations. The digital text used for this purpose is the
Uthmani text of the Tanzil Quran Text. This text is widely used. All
vocalized Arabic text is quoted unaltered in any shape or form from the
Tanzil text. Unvocalized Arabic text and transcriptions are my own. In
this series, each Key Word, here adjectives, nouns, proper nouns and
verbs, is presented together with the following key data: Degree of
Concentration, Weighted Distribution, Correlations and Collocation
Frequencies. The Key Words are always referenced by their lemma and are
sorted alphabetically according to Arabic and UNICODE order. In
lemmatizing the words, no attention has been given to the semantics of
each word. Only on rare occasion have similar forms of words or proper
nouns been separated in order to avoid confusion. In assigning each word
a lemma, Classical dictionaries and Quran commentaries, as well as
modern Quran dictionaries have been consulted. Deciding on these is not
always obvious, since classical dictionaries and commentaries sometimes
either disagree or present divergent variant readings or root and lemma
attributions. It is our hope and aim that this series contributes to
Computational Linguistics and Digital Humanities in general, and
Computational Linguistics research on the Quran in particular. <br /></p></blockquote><blockquote><div class="manufacturers"><span class="label">Publisher:</span> <span class="value"> <a href="https://www.gorgiaspress.com/gorgias-press-llc">Gorgias Press LLC</a> </span></div><div class="additional-details"><div class="sku"><span class="label">SKU (ISBN):</span> <span class="value" id="sku-32161" itemprop="sku">978-1-4632-4414-9</span> <br /></div></div></blockquote><blockquote><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">Series:</span> <span class="value"><a href="https://www.gorgiaspress.com/gorgias-islamic-studies">Gorgias Islamic Studies</a> 16</span></div><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">Publication Date:</span> <span class="value"> Feb 23,2022</span></div><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">Interior Color:</span> <span class="value">Black</span></div><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">Trim Size:</span> <span class="value">6 x 9 </span></div><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">Page Count:</span> <span class="value">516</span></div><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">Languages:</span> <span class="value">Arabic, English</span></div><div class="Subtitle"><span class="label">ISBN:</span> <span class="value" id="ISBN">978-1-4632-4414-9</span></div></blockquote></div>Chuck Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12882192031767315365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4914251619715378408.post-59534068872199932932023-03-22T10:32:00.003-04:002023-03-22T10:55:54.532-04:00Open Access Book: Libraries in the Manuscript Age<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.csmc.uni-hamburg.de/publications/smc/smc29.html" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="310" data-original-width="210" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOOGqfBZMEomiOO9THb73JALkLpa-lY_hDOJu5dcVLjXk_V5PDmOk8l5RieH19mnb0cxi3A-ySaz0NSDJJ1_-giMEdnm_ZSFfWQeX3Ylcx6qhXZrCuagYuwDsM7vr2VlWjq_2IyiX04jpEkj1D6lpdO-jqreuQB4quwuroQdCcgAT7ImsZjymTvsVn/s1600/smc-29-small.png" width="210" /></a></div><br />Title: <a href="https://www.csmc.uni-hamburg.de/publications/smc/smc29.html">Libraries in the Manuscript Age</a><p></p><p>Contributors: Luciano Bossina, Nuria de Castilla, Gérard Colas, Jean-Pierre Drège, François Déroche, Michael Friedrich, Vanina Kopp, Donatella Nebbiai <br />ISBN: 9783110779653</p><div><br /></div><div>Summary:<br />"The case studies presented in this volume help illuminate the rationale for the founding of libraries in an age when books were handwritten, thus contributing to the comparative history of libraries. They focus on examples ranging from the seventh to the seventeenth century emanating from the Muslim World, East Asia, Byzantium and Western Europe. Accumulation and preservation are the key motivations for the development of libraries. Rulers, scholars and men of religion were clearly dedicated to collecting books and sought to protect these fragile objects against the various hazards that threatened their survival. Many of these treasured books are long gone, but there remain hosts of evidence enabling one to reconstruct the collections to which they belonged, found in ancient buildings, literary accounts, archival documentation and, most crucially, catalogues. With such material at hand or, in some cases, the manuscripts of a certain library which have come down to us, it is possible to reflect on the nature of these libraries of the past, the interests of their owners, and their role in the intellectual history of the manuscript age..."</div>Peter Magierskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12809671722889628352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4914251619715378408.post-55359160077457317672023-03-22T10:13:00.009-04:002023-03-22T10:56:04.986-04:00Open Access Book: Muslim Cultures of the Indian Ocean<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://ecommons.aku.edu/uk_ismc_series_emc/10/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1198" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWv2vEr1hbNopGET7v0I0dkkg-makmQjKGq3_mocs-1pQqX3VBRNMO_Fo3yAL3ix-hxrzvG4sA1IaQF5hn-XlhbwF9SvBPOOTtkN8dd_CFYAo_ZZDmmKcYOgkbE156lp-wHc3wF3kGr1haPIz-lQC1nf-AW7R9kOPo4WwPSy8Tbg9epzPUzuGF6lU5/s320/product_pages.jpg" width="214" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Author: Pradines, Stéphane<br />Title: <a href="https://ecommons.aku.edu/uk_ismc_series_emc/10/">Muslim Cultures of the Indian Ocean : Diversity and Pluralism Past and Present.</a><br />Published: Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press; 2023.<br />ISBN: 9781474486521</p><p>Summary:</p><p>"Scholars are increasingly recognising the centrality of the Indian Ocean in the study of Muslim cultures.<br />This volume explores the expanding and changing roles of these Muslim communities across the Indian Ocean World from the seventh century to the mediaeval period to the present day. The book goes beyond the usual focus on geographical sub-regions to highlight different aspects of interconnectivity in relation to Islam. By analysing textual and material evidence, the fifteen papers in this volume examine identities and diasporas, manuscripts and literature, as well as vernacular and religious architecture. It explores the networks and movements of peoples, ideas and ideologies, as well as art, culture, religion and heritage."</p><p><br /></p>Peter Magierskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12809671722889628352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4914251619715378408.post-69207764796052016342023-03-03T16:29:00.004-05:002023-03-03T16:29:28.945-05:00Zaidan Foundation<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://zaidanfoundation.org/al-hilal-issues-1892-2007/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="426" data-original-width="1259" height="135" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9sN-PojkujCDEJmdoGG7XynDF_IPB8F3sVsThwd0y49Gk06G0MAitp2mJGDju9UPR5yxT_GzBuj5HRxxdg0IdNGoW4DaKnfv-Q06ozfZz-Ok6U4-QSKY1qhGnXE6Xc9XValhX0Gi8mokYU8S115dOSWYijzrIbGgbe60aiJLtISU4EJnTRNPCg3gm/w400-h135/capture.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />"The mission of the Zaidan Foundation is to enhance intercultural understanding starting with the international dissemination of the Arab cultural heritage."<p></p><p>The Foundation, established in 2010, made the following available online :<br /><br /><a href="https://zaidanfoundation.org/al-hilal-issues-1892-2007/">al-Hilal issues (1892-2007), Major Articles, Complete Novels.</a></p>Peter Magierskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12809671722889628352noreply@blogger.com0
