Open Access Journal Archive: Adalah's Review (1999-2009)

Adalah's review
Published:     Shfaram, Israel : Adalah,
Year: 1999-2009

Ceased with v. 5 (spring 2009)

Adalah's Review Volume 5 - On Criminalization (Spring 2009)
Volume 5 of Adalah’s Review takes as its point of departure a theme raised in the previous volume, the question of political dissent by Palestinians – in this case dissent by Palestinian citizens of Israel and the occupied Palestinian population – and explores ways in which dissent has been criminalized. The articles in this volume examine a range of channels pursued by Israel to this end, including holding political trials of Palestinian political leaders, legislation aimed at further entrenching the criminalization of political dissent, the operation of the military court system, and the creation of the category of “security prisoner” within the Israeli prison system, which ...
Adalah's Review Volume 4 - In the Name of Security (Spring 2004)
From the introduction, by Samera Esmeir: It is difficult to devote an issue of a critical journal published by a human rights organization to the theme of “security.” For in such a case, the work of critique is expected to juxtapose security considerations with human rights, and to reveal the violations of the latter carried out “in the name of security.” Demography, Arab-owned lands, Arab Palestinians moving and crossing borders, political dissent, certain forms of knowledge, speech, memory and the relationship to the past – all of these, as the articles in this issue elaborate, have been realized as security concerns in Israel. The term security contains the reasons, the ...
Adalah's Review - Volume 3 - Law and Violence (Summer 2002)
Law and violence are often understood to be opposites. The rule of law is conceived of as constituting an orderly alternative to violence. In abandoning this dichotomous depiction of law and violence, legal scholar Robert Cover describes how law manages to work its lethal will while distancing itself from its violent deeds. Violence, others argue, provides the method for establishing legal order, the means through which law works, and the reason for having law.
Adalah's Review Volume 2 - Land (Fall 2000)
Volume II of Adalah's Review focuses on the issue of land, which is the main subject responsible for the existing tension between the state and the indigenous Palestinian community. It also includes a special discussion on the implications of the Supreme Court's March 2000 judgment in Qa'dan, which concerns the right of a Palestinian family to live in a Jewish settlement in Israel, and highlights Adalah's recent legal work in different fields.
Adalah's Review Volume 1 - Politics, Identity and Law (Fall 1999)
Adalah published the first volume of its new journal, entitled Adalah's Review, in December of 1999. Adalah's Review is intended to open a critical stage for discussion of Israeli law, the legal system and legal discourse, specifically focusing on subjects that relate to the status of the Palestinian minority in Israel. The journal is published in Arabic, Hebrew and English. The English edition, which contains slightly differing content, is also meant to provide general background to some of the debates taking place - legally, politically and socially - between the Palestinian minority and the Israeli Jewish state, and to introduce Adalah's work to the broader international community.

World Digital Library recently posted 215 issues of an early Iraqi newspaper Ṣadá Bābil digitized by the Iraqi National Library and Archives.

v.1-6; nos.4-260 (1909-1914)

"Seda Babel (Echo of Babylon), first published in 1909 in Baghdad, was among Iraq’s earliest newspapers. It appeared weekly on Friday. Until the end of World War I, Iraq was part of the Ottoman Empire and was subject to Ottoman law. In 1908, in line with the liberalizing revolution of the Young Turks, imperial press regulation loosened, allowing Iraq’s intellectuals and writers the freedom to publish newspapers, magazines, and books..."

Open Access Journal Archive: al-Arab (1917-1920)

http://www.wdl.org/en/search/?collection=al-arab-newspaper-collection

World Digital Library recently posted 353 issues of an early Iraqi newspaper al-Arab digitized by Iraqi National Library and Archives.

"The newspaper Al-Arab (The Arabs) was first published in Baghdad on July 4, 1917, some four months after British troops captured the city from the Turks, thereby ending three centuries of Ottoman rule.
The paper appeared at a critical period in the history of Iraq. Issued by the British authorities, it served as a mouthpiece for the British administration at a time of rising Iraqi and Arab nationalism. It depicted the Ottomans as foreigners and the British as liberators and sought to advance broader British military and political strategy against the Ottomans in World War I"

Exhibit: Preserving the Iraqi Jewish Archive

Preserving the Iraqi Jewish Archive

http://ija.archives.gov/sites/default/files/ija-logo-home.jpg

Startling evidence of the once vibrant Jewish life in Iraq came to light in May 2003 — over 2,700 books and tens of thousands of documents were discovered in the flooded basement of the Iraqi intelligence headquarters by a US Army team. The remarkable survival of this written record of Iraqi Jewish life provides an unexpected opportunity to better understand this 2,500-year-old Jewish community. For centuries, it had flourished in what had generally been a tolerant, multicultural society. But circumstances changed dramatically for Jews in the mid-twentieth century, when most Iraqi Jews fled and were stripped of their citizenship and assets. To provide accessibility throughout the world to the damaged materials found in 2003, the US National Archives and Records Administration and its partners have preserved, cataloged, and digitized the books and documents.

Open Access E-Magazine: Rowayat - Literary journal emerging from Egypt

http://www.rowayat.com/

Rowayat - Literary Journal emerging from Egypt
"Our vision is to create a space where high quality literary work can be read and be accessible. A space for both emerging and established writers, who dream and write in English. This literary journal, will give a voice to Egyptian writers who express themselves creatively in English. A way for writers of this generation to express themselves. Also to be included in this journal are Egyptian writers who are abroad, and foreign writers who live in Egypt. If we had an association it would be called the Egyptian English Fiction Writers Association, and this would be its journal.
This journal is to feature/highlight only works of fiction. Future Egyptian writers can look back, read, understand maybe get a glimpse of what it was like to write in Egypt today. Maybe also what it means to be Egyptian today. What it's like to be creative today in Egypt.Any non-fiction will be either interviews with renowned/successful authors or about something relating to English fiction writing in Egypt. All the visuals will include Art that reflects the fiction included. The journal will be issued bi-annually. Arabic fiction already has several literary journals. So Arabic fiction will not be included and neither will Arabic in translation."

Sharing Ancient Wisdoms

Sharing Ancient Wisdoms
Welcome to the website of the Sharing Ancient Wisdoms project, and the SAWS Dynamic Library of Wisdom Literatures.

This project was funded by Humanities in the European Research Area, as part of their first Joint Research Programme. We are very grateful to them, and to our home institutions: King’s College London, The Newman Institute Uppsala, and the University of Vienna.
...The focus of the SAWS project is on collections of ideas and opinions – ranging from pithy sayings to short passages from longer philosophical texts - which make up the ancient genre of Wisdom Literature.  Such collections are found in all the cultures of the Middle East and Europe; but they have tended to be treated by scholars as nothing more than quarries for the earlier materials which they excerpted. They are also not easy to publish in book form, since each collection is a composition with its own identity. But they are key components in understanding the societies where they circulated, and the formation and transmission of ideas, both within those societies and between them, since many have been chosen for translation. Thus the collection of sayings published by Caxton, which circulated in several western European languages, was based on the Spanish translation of an Arabic collection, itself drawing on ancient Greek traditions...

Open Access: Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg Working Papers (Mamluk Studies)

http://www.mamluk.uni-bonn.de/publications/working-paper

ASK Working Paper

History and Society during the Mamluk Era (1250-1517)
ISSN: 2193-925X

The Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg will provide an institutional center for a period of eight years for the 50-60 Mamluk scholars who are dispersed all over the globe. The concept emphasizes two issues: Firstly, the Kolleg members will provide long-lasting impulses for Mamluk Studies through their individual projects (a specific “Mamluk Studies” series, a Compendium on the History and Society of the Mamluk Era, an online bibliography, articles in the Mamluk Studies Review). In addition, the Speaker will, supported by a research professorship (“Annemarie-Schimmel-Chair for Mamluk Studies”), and in cooperation with four of his Bonn colleagues [Mathias Becher (Medieval History), Ralph Kauz (Sinology), Peter Schwieger (Tibetology), Reinhard Zöllner (Japanology)] integrate the Mamlukists by means of topic-oriented annual programs (1st Year: The Mamluk Empire in its “Global” Context , 2nd Year: Economic Areas of Interaction, 3rd Year: “Rule” in the Mamluk Empire - A Cross-cultural Comparison, 4th Year: Culture-specific Narrative Strategies in Mamluk Era Historiographical Sources) into interdisciplinary and innovative research topics. Young Arabic scholars will receive focused support within a group of scholarship recipients that will be integrated into the Kolleg.
