Syria: A Living History (exhibition catalogue, Aga Khan Museum, Toronto)

Syria: A Living History

Oct 15 2016 to Feb 26 2017

Few countries have captured the world’s attention like Syria has today. Stories of conflict and displacement dominate the media and define people’s awareness of the place. Syria: A Living History brings together artifacts and artworks that tell a different story — one of cultural diversity, historical continuity, resourcefulness, and resilience. For over five millennia, this region perched on the eastern Mediterranean has witnessed great world civilizations commingling on its soil and producing art, literature, and culture that constitute the country’s rich legacy. Strongly informed by a distinctive landscape and history, artists of Syria throughout the ages have made priceless contributions to world heritage. Syria: A Living History inspires new understanding of Syria’s past and present, and invites new ways of thinking about its future.

Afghanistan in 2016: A Survey of the Afghan People

Publisher: The Asia Foundation, 2016
275 pages

"The national mood in Afghanistan is at a record low, and Afghans are pessimistic because of insecurity, corruption, and rising unemployment and slow job growth. At the same time, more Afghans, particularly rural Afghan men, now support women’s right to vote and women’s right to work outside the home than ever before. The 2016 Survey of the Afghan People polled 12,658 Afghan respondents from 16 ethnic groups across all 34 provinces, including insecure and physically challenging environments. The annual survey is the longest-running and broadest nationwide survey of Afghan attitudes and opinions. Since 2004, the Survey has gathered the opinions of more than 87,000 Afghan men and women, providing a unique longitudinal portrait of evolving public perceptions of security, the economy, governance and government services, elections, media, women’s issues, and migration."

The Destruction of Cultural Heritage: From Napoléon to ISIS

The Destruction of Cultural Heritage: From Napoléon to ISIS

This dossier of original essays examines the demolition of monuments in the Middle East from the Napoléonic era to the present. The authors describe the impact of obliterating architecture on our psyches, cultures, philosophies, and historiographies. Tracing the mediatization of demolition, and its traps and tropes, such as sensationalism and anthropmorphization, these essays also explore the agencies and capacities of threatened monuments.

Digital Library of the Middle East - Proposal

Digital Library of the Middle East

"CLIR is working with The Antiquities Coalition and other institutions in the United States and abroad to explore the feasibility and technical prototyping of a Digital Library of the Middle East (DLME). The DLME would create a digitally based, internationally shared inventory of cultural artifacts that includes detailed descriptions and images, and confirms objects’ ownership and legal status. This information would help determine whether an item of cultural or historical significance offered for sale or being transferred was acquired illegally. Images and brief descriptions from the DLME could be made publicly available to encourage greater understanding of the region's cultural legacy and respect for the importance of the cultural commonwealth, while helping to safeguard a fundamentally important expression of our humanity.
The initial stage of this work is supported with a planning grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Read the news release.
An abridged version of the planning grant proposal is available here.
Read CLIR President Charles Henry's blog, "A Digital Library for the Middle East".

Open Access Database: BÜLENT ECEVİT ARTICLES - Arts and Politics in the 1950s

http://www.ecevityazilari.org/

BÜLENT ECEVİT ARTICLES - Arts and Politics in the 1950s

"This online database consists of some 1,500 Turkish- and English-language articles written by Bülent Ecevit between 1950 and 1961, the majority of them for the prominent daily paper Ulus. While much is known of Ecevit’s long career as a statesman–beginning with his service as Minister of Labor 1961 and lasting well into the 2000s–this early chapter in his life remains largely unknown. Yet the cultural commentary, art criticism, political analyses and travel writings that he produced in the 1950s constitute an extraordinarily prolific and consistent body of work on the importance of civic culture and democracy. The columns reveal the seeds of his later political thought, as well as giving a new perspective on the importance of the arts to his intellectual life."

A semiannual publication of the American Studies Association of Turkey, Journal of American Studies of Turkey operates with a blind peer referee system. It publishes transdisciplinary work in English by scholars of any nationality on American literature, history, art, music, film, popular culture, institutions, politics, economics, geography, and related subjects. The American Studies Association of Turkey disclaims responsibility for statements, whether of fact or opinion, made by contributors.

The American Studies Association of Turkey was founded in 1988 to promote American Studies in Turkey and where possible to assist Turkish and non-Turkish scholars working in the field by providing material and funds. It also aims to further research and publication in Turkish-American comparative studies.

Journal of American Studies of Turkey has been indexed in the MLA International Bibliography, Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory, and the American Humanities Index since the publication of its first issue of Spring 1995, and in the MLA Directory of Periodicals since 1999

JSTOR survey on journals of historical significance in Arabic

JSTOR, the archive of scholarly content, is seeking to expand to include journals in more languages in its corpus, to reflect the global scholarly community and serve more scholars around the world. Arabic is one of these languages. This brief survey provides an opportunity for librarians, faculty, and scholars to share expertise on journals of historical significance in Arabic, and to voice opinions on building a corpus of digital journal content in Arabic, as well as in the discipline of Middle East Studies more generally. Input on the shaping of such a project is most welcome. This survey can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JSTORArabic

Open Source Arabic OCR

Working paper :
Important New Developments in Arabographic Optical Character Recognition (OCR) by
Maxim Romanov, Matthew Thomas Miller, Sarah Bowen Savant, and Benjamin Kiessling.
 Highlights from the paper:

"The OpenITI team—building on the foundational open-source OCR work of the Leipzig University’s (LU) Alexander von Humboldt Chair for Digital Humanities—has achieved Optical Character Recognition (OCR) accuracy rates for classical Arabic-script texts in the high nineties "

"The specific type of OCR software that we employed in our tests is an
open-source OCR program called Kraken, which was developed by Benjamin
Kiessling at Leipzig University’s Alexander von Humboldt Chair for Digital
Humanities. Unlike more traditional OCR approaches, Kraken relies on a neural
network—which mimics the way we learn—to recognize letters in the images of
entire lines of text without trying first to segment lines into words and then words
into letters."

"The most important advantage of Kraken is that its workflow allows one to train new
models relatively easily, including text-specific ones. In a nutshell, the process of
training requires a transcription of approximately 800 lines (the number will vary
depending on the complexity of the typeface) aligned with images of these lines as
they appear in the printed edition."

"The two rounds of testing presented here indicate that with a fairly modest amount
of gold standard training data (~800–1,000 lines) Kraken is consistently able to
produce OCR results for Arabic-script documents that achieve accuracy rates in the
high nineties."

"In the long term, we will are also planning to train models for other Islamicate languages (Ottoman Turkish,Urdu, Syriac, etc.). Our hope is that an easy-to-use and effective OCR pipeline will allow us all—collectively—to significantly enrich our collection of digital Islamicate texts and thereby enable us to understand better this fascinating and understudied textual tradition."

ANS Digital Library: Ebooks

ANS Digital Library: Ebooks

Over its 150-year history, the American Numismatic Society has published hundreds of monographs. Many of these were scanned by the Google Books project and are now openly accessible through HathiTrust. However, these scanned books provide little functionality for keyword searches or linking to related resources in the archives or numismatic collection of the ANS. As a result, we are publishing fully functional Open Access ebooks through our Digital Library, including EPUB and PDF derivatives for mobile devices.
