Open Access Reports: The Environment and the Middle East (Middle East Institute)

The Environment and the Middle East (Volume 3)

"This concluding volume of the MEI Viewpoints series on the Environment and the Middle East explores the scope and modalities for region-wide and international cooperation to address the environmental challenges facing the Middle East. The implications of two such challenges that receive special attention in this volume — climate change and the increasing pressure on the Nile — are far-reaching and profound. As the contributors emphasize, though self-help is necessary, it is insufficient. Furthermore, international support for mitigating measures, while critical, should be geared toward projects that have a regional dimension."

The Environment and the Middle East: New Approaches and New Actors

Volume II in this series offers snapshots of a small selection of the many efforts aimed at cultivating responsible environmental stewardship.

The Environment and the Middle East: Pathways to Sustainability

This volume is the first of several collections of essays dealing with the Middle East and the Environment. Importantly, these essays focus less on the problems themselves than on what can and should be done to address them. As the sub-title “Pathways to Sustainability” suggests, the series features some of the many examples of environmental stewardship practiced and promoted throughout the region -- by scientists, teachers, non-governmental organizations, community activists, and many others.
