Das Bild des Orients: Bilagentur für Islamische Kunst
 

Das Bild des Orients stellt Agenturen, Verlagen, wissenschaftlichen Institutionen und privaten Nutzern Bildmaterial zum islamischen, christlichen und Alten Orient in seiner Vielfalt zur Verfügung. Dabei sollen wissenschaftliche Interessen (Bildarchiv) und eine kommerzielle Nutzung (Bildagentur) miteinander verbunden werden.

Verstärkt wird auch historisches Bildmaterial zum Orient präsentiert. Aufgrund der großen Veränderungen im Orient kann man als "historisch" schon Bilder aus den 1960er Jahren (und älter) bezeichnen. Sie finden interessante Aufnahmen, u.a. aus der Türkei und dem Jemen, aufgenommen von dem Geologen Dr. Erich-Holm von Prosch, der u.a. in den 1950er Jahren auf Einladung Imam Ahmads (reg. 1948-62) im Jemen nach Erdöl gesucht hat. Aus seiner Sammlung stammen auch einige Aufnahmen, die Imam Ahmad bei seinem Besuch in Sanaa zeigen, u.a. mit dem saudischen König Saud b. Abd al-Aziz (1954).

Zu den Highlights gehören eine Aufnahme des deutschen Kaisers Wilhelm II. zusammen mit dem osmanischen Sultan Mehmed V. in der offenen Kutsche bei der Fahrt durch Konstantinopel (1917) oder die Gesamtansicht des Yildiz Saray mit der Hamidiye Moschee aus dem berühmten Photostudio Sebah & Joaillier in Konstantinopel.

Außerdem wird ausgesuchtes "Fremdmaterial" zugänglich gemacht, wie z.B. Photos aus dem Nachlass Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815 - 1905) der Stiftung Wetzstein, die in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin

The image archive "Das Bild des Orients" offers a wide range of photographic material of the Islamic (Christian and Ancient) Orient to agencies, publishing houses and scholarly institutions as well to private users. Selling images is the basic to be able to run, enlarge and enhance the archive.

More and more historical photographs are also presented on the website. Due to the dramatic changes the Orient underwent since the 1960s, the label "historical" is given to images which are older than 40 years (in 2005). See e.g. the unknown photos and slides from Turkey and Yemen taken in the 1950s by the German geologist Dr. Erich-Holm von Prosch, one of the first oil explorers in Yemen, invited by Imam Ahmad (ruling 1948-62). From his collection comes a photo showing Imam Ahmad in Sanaa on occasion of the visit of the Saudi Arab king Saud b. Abd al-Aziz (in 1954) .

To the highlights belong images showing the German emperor Wilhelm II. together with the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V. in the open coach in Constantinople in 1917 or the general view of the Yildiz Saray with the Hamidiye mosque from the famous photo studio Sebah & Joaillier in Constantinople.

We will also present more selected photographic material from other institutions, such as the unusual photos from the estate of Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815 - 1905) in the Wetzstein foundation, kept in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

Review of ARMENIAN STUDIES: A Quarterly Journal Of History, Politics and International Relations

The Institute for Armenian Research was established in 2001 within the framework of the Center for Eurasian Strategic Studies, as a privately-funded and objective think-tank. The basic aim of the Institute was to examine the Armenian question within a broad perspective, including its historical, political, legal and international relations dimensions. Within this framework, it analyzes the complex phenomenon of the “Armenian question” by utilizing the works of social sciences and history disciplines through a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach.

The fields examined by the Institute include the Armenian Question, Armenian Diaspora, Armenian domestic and foreign policy as well as the Karabagh Question. The Institute regularly publishes two quarterly journals in which these issues are studied in detail. The first one is the “Ermeni Çal??malar?”, which has been published since 2001, and the second one is the “Review of Armenian Studies” since 2002.

صحيفة آفاق أثرية هي مشروع ثقافي ليبي يسعى إلى نشر الثقافة التاريخية والأثرية بين أفراد المجتمع، كما أنها تسعى إلى التعريف بالآثار الليبية على وجه الخصوص لنشر الوعي الأثري بين الناس حتى يسهموا في حماية الآثار بعد الإحساس بقيمتها، لاسيما أن الآثار تتعرض حالياً للإهمال والتدمير.

American Board Pamphlet Collection

The American Board pamphlet collection was incorporated into the ARIT Istanbul (ARIT-I) Library in January 2011. It contains roughly 1000 brochures, booklets, leaflets, flyers, and off-prints that date from the mid-1800s to the present, with close to one-third from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Approximately 85% of the materials focus on the operations, institutions, or affiliate organizations of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) that were located in Turkey and the Balkans.

The ABCFM was a Protestant mission agency founded in 1810 and chartered by the state of Massachusetts in 1812. It dispatched missionaries around the world for religious ends chiefly, but also to pursue general altruistic labor, including founding schools and medical facilities. Between 1820—when the American Board’s first personnel arrived in Izmir—and the second decade of the twentieth century, the organization established more than 20 mission stations, 50 boarding and high schools, and ten colleges in Anatolia and its surroundings. Unquestionably, the ABCFM was the most significant American presence in the region during this era.

Though ephemera, the items in the American Board pamphlet collection offer a rich and enduring source of information on this major historical enterprise. Some of the materials are available at research libraries in the United States, but the ARIT Istanbul Library now possesses one of the most extensive holdings, both in Turkey and internationally. The project to capture them digitally and provide public access to the scans via the ARIT Istanbul Digital Library is being implemented jointly by ARIT and the Digital Library for International Research (DLIR). It is supported by a grant from the US Department of Education’s Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (TICFIA) program to DLIR partners.

American Board Periodical Collection

The American Board periodical collection was incorporated into the ARIT Istanbul (ARIT-I) Library in January 2011, when ARIT received the library of the Western Turkey Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), one of the chief Protestant missionary agencies in the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The core of this collection includes a number of rare serials issued locally by the Board and its affiliates, as well as other American organizations.
Currently, ARIT is digitizing and uploading to the collection two of the most important English-language journals published in Turkey at the beginning of the twentieth century: The Levant Trade Review, issued by the American Chamber of Commerce for Turkey and the Levant from 1911 to 1931, and The Orient, produced by the ABCFM’s Istanbul office between 1910 and 1923. Financial support for this project—to make these crucial historical sources available internationally on the worldwide web—is being provided by a grant from the United States Department of State.
