In this volume amulets and talismans are studied within a broader system of meaning that shapes how they were manufactured, activated and used in different networks. Text, material features and the environments in which these artifacts circulated, are studied alongside each other, resulting in an innovative approach to understand the many different functions these objects could fulfil in pre-modern times. Produced and used by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, the case studies presented here include objects that differ in size, material, language and shape. What the articles share is an all-round, in-depth approach that helps the reader understand the complexity of the objects discussed and will improve one’s understanding of the role they played within pre-modern societies.

New OA Resource: Middle East Women's Activism (SOAS Digital Collections)

"Middle East Women’s Activism digital archive is a collection of interviews with 96 women of different generations in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon, which form the basis of a monograph, entitled, Embodying Geopolitics: Generations of Women’s Activism in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. All interviews were conducted by Nicola Pratt, University of Warwick, in 2013-2014 as part of a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship exploring the relationship between gender and geopolitics in the context of the Middle East. The research received approval from the University of Warwick Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee and consent was given at the time of interview to make this material publicly available. 

The archive will be of interest to researchers in the fields of gender studies and post-independence social history in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. The interviews consist of women’s personal narratives of their family background and education, how they became involved in public work (al-‘amal al-‘am), information about their activism and how it has changed over time and the impact of/their involvement in major national events, amongst other details." Revue interdisciplinaire à comité scientifique, les Cahiers d'EMAM se proposent de contribuer à la restitution des savoirs en sciences sociales sur le Monde arabe et la Méditerranée. La revue est ouverte aux analyses traitant des questions urbaines, des processus de constructions/reconfigurations territoriales dans leurs dimensions historiques, sociales, économiques et politiques ainsi que leurs interférences avec le reste du monde.

S'inscrivant dans la continuité des Cahiers d'URBAMA (parus entre 1988 et 2000 et dont la mise en ligne est prévue sur ce même site), la revue perpétue ainsi une tradition d'édition qui doit permettre l'échange et le débat scientifique entre chercheurs confirmés et doctorants, mais aussi entre le monde de la recherche et celui des professionnels, des acteurs de l'aménagement et des acteurs sociaux.

Les Cahiers d'EMAM doivent notamment stimuler la valorisation des travaux des chercheurs basés dans le Monde arabe et méditerranéen. Les approches nouvelles, les travaux en cours ainsi que les démarches comparatives sont privilégiés (se reporter à "Procédure de publication et de sélection").

The ASTENE Bulletin is published four times a year and aims to keep members informed of research interests and queries in the field of travel in Egypt and the Near East. Members are encouraged to submit information and material for the Bulletin relating to on-going research and interests, conferences etc.

There is also a focus on useful subject-related bibliographies and biographies. The Bulletin contains the following regular or semi-regular features: articles — perhaps on work in progress, which should be no more than 2,000 words; select bibliographies; features on research resources; ASTENE news: publications, conferences, seminars, exhibitions etc.; other exhibitions, conferences of interest; announcements of relevant books/articles — in preparation, forthcoming, recently published; members' notes and queries.

Submissions for the next Bulletin must be received by 15th December 2010. We welcome articles, queries, replies and other related matters from members. Please send the contributions to the Editors, Sheila and Russell McGuirk via email at bulletin@astene.org.uk

Manar Al-Athar منار الآثار: Free multi-media resource for the study of the Middle East

The Manar al-Athar website, based at the University of Oxford, aims to provide high resolution, searchable images for teaching, research, and publication. These images of archaeological sites, with buildings and art, will cover the areas of the former Roman empire which later came under Islamic rule, such as Syro-Palestine/the Levant, Arabia, Egypt, North Africa and Spain. The chronological range is from Alexander the Great (i.e., from about 300 BC) through, the Islamic period to the present. It is the first website of its kind providing such material labelled jointly in both Arabic and English. We will also be publishing related material, both online and on paper, in English and Arabic.

يهدف موقع منار الآثار الإلكتروني، التابع لجامعة أكسفورد، إلى تزويدكم بصور عالية الجودة للغايات العلمية والتعليمية والبحثية؛ إذ تحتوي الصور على نماذج معمارية وفنية لمواقع أثرية كانت ضمن مناطق الإمبراطورية الرومانية السابقة والتي وقعت لاحقاً تحت الحكم الإسلامي: مثل بلاد الشام وبعض أجزاء الجزيرة العربية ومصر وشمال أفريقيا وأسبانيا. تمتد الفترة الزمنية لهذه المواقع الأثرية من أيام الإسكندر المقدوني (حوالي 300 قبل الميلاد) والفترة الإسلامية إلى الوقت الحاضر. يعد موقع منار الآثار الإلكتروني الأول من نوعه الذي يزود روّاده بمواد معنونة باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية معاً. فضلاً عن ذلك سيتم نشر مواد ذات صلة بالموضوع على الموقع الإلكتروني و بشكل ورقي باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية

Manar al-Athar is Arabic for "Guide to Archaeology" and has been chosen because Manara, in Egypt, refers to both the Lighthouse of Alexandria (the Pharos) and to minarets. This conveys the transition, and often continuity, covered by the chronological range of the material.

Asfar

Asfar is a new dynamic initiative designed to inspire, provide a platform and offer a support network to young people, students and graduates specialising in and interested by the Middle East.

Through a quarterly e-journal, News updates, and a Travelers Network, Asfar will work with the next generation of the Middle East's writers, thinkers and photographers to exhibit their abilities to a wide audience including academia, diplomatic and general readership.
Focusing on the history, society, culture, development and politics of the Middle East, the e-journal will introduce new ideas, innovative articles and magnificent images of the Middle East.

Remaining politically neutral and non-partisan, Asfar articles will cover a full range of topics: from geography to art, languages to society and from history to cookery. Asfar will review the past and consider the Middle East's future from a regional, state and local perspective.

Asfar is unique project aimed at promoting the study of the region, the curiosity and personal development of individuals fascinated by the Middle East and ensuring the sustained awareness of an area on the cross roads of history.

Das Bild des Orients

Das Bild des Orients: Bilagentur für Islamische Kunst
 

Das Bild des Orients stellt Agenturen, Verlagen, wissenschaftlichen Institutionen und privaten Nutzern Bildmaterial zum islamischen, christlichen und Alten Orient in seiner Vielfalt zur Verfügung. Dabei sollen wissenschaftliche Interessen (Bildarchiv) und eine kommerzielle Nutzung (Bildagentur) miteinander verbunden werden.

Verstärkt wird auch historisches Bildmaterial zum Orient präsentiert. Aufgrund der großen Veränderungen im Orient kann man als "historisch" schon Bilder aus den 1960er Jahren (und älter) bezeichnen. Sie finden interessante Aufnahmen, u.a. aus der Türkei und dem Jemen, aufgenommen von dem Geologen Dr. Erich-Holm von Prosch, der u.a. in den 1950er Jahren auf Einladung Imam Ahmads (reg. 1948-62) im Jemen nach Erdöl gesucht hat. Aus seiner Sammlung stammen auch einige Aufnahmen, die Imam Ahmad bei seinem Besuch in Sanaa zeigen, u.a. mit dem saudischen König Saud b. Abd al-Aziz (1954).

Zu den Highlights gehören eine Aufnahme des deutschen Kaisers Wilhelm II. zusammen mit dem osmanischen Sultan Mehmed V. in der offenen Kutsche bei der Fahrt durch Konstantinopel (1917) oder die Gesamtansicht des Yildiz Saray mit der Hamidiye Moschee aus dem berühmten Photostudio Sebah & Joaillier in Konstantinopel.

Außerdem wird ausgesuchtes "Fremdmaterial" zugänglich gemacht, wie z.B. Photos aus dem Nachlass Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815 - 1905) der Stiftung Wetzstein, die in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin

The image archive "Das Bild des Orients" offers a wide range of photographic material of the Islamic (Christian and Ancient) Orient to agencies, publishing houses and scholarly institutions as well to private users. Selling images is the basic to be able to run, enlarge and enhance the archive.

More and more historical photographs are also presented on the website. Due to the dramatic changes the Orient underwent since the 1960s, the label "historical" is given to images which are older than 40 years (in 2005). See e.g. the unknown photos and slides from Turkey and Yemen taken in the 1950s by the German geologist Dr. Erich-Holm von Prosch, one of the first oil explorers in Yemen, invited by Imam Ahmad (ruling 1948-62). From his collection comes a photo showing Imam Ahmad in Sanaa on occasion of the visit of the Saudi Arab king Saud b. Abd al-Aziz (in 1954) .

To the highlights belong images showing the German emperor Wilhelm II. together with the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V. in the open coach in Constantinople in 1917 or the general view of the Yildiz Saray with the Hamidiye mosque from the famous photo studio Sebah & Joaillier in Constantinople.

We will also present more selected photographic material from other institutions, such as the unusual photos from the estate of Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815 - 1905) in the Wetzstein foundation, kept in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

2011 was a year without precedent for the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa region. It was a year in which millions of people of all ages and backgrounds flooded on to the streets to demand change. Dubbed the “Arab Spring”, in fact the protests brought together in common cause people from many different communities. This report describes the events of this tumultuous year, one which saw much suffering and sadness but also spread hope within the region and beyond, to countries where other people face repression and everyday abuse of their human rights.

Speak Memory: Archive Map

Born out of the Speak Memory symposium, the “Archive Map” research project seeks to create a growing database of archival collections and other resources that contain material relevant to the Middle East’s modern and contemporary art history. The “Archive Map” is currently limited to four countries: Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. These countries have been selected because of their rich modern and contemporary art history and also because of our working relationship with several researchers that have been exploring archival collections in these countries. Lead researchers include Clare Davies for Egypt, Anneka Lenssen for Syria, Sarah Rogers for Lebanon and Saleem Al-Bahloly for Iraq.

Speak Memory offers archival information on maps in the Middle East, namely on Syria, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq.
