The Olive Tree: An international collection of art protesting the ongoing genocide of Palestinians.
This
publication is a direct response to the war in Gaza, the ongoing genocide and
ethnic cleansing campaign, and the illegal settlements and apartheid system
that Palestinians are subject to.
We
are a group of students who believe in the power of art to make a change to
this suffering. Where political rhetoric has failed, where news reporting
agencies have faltered in delivering truth, we believe that art has a massive
potential to capture and convey the plight of the Palestinian people to those
who seem otherwise unbothered. As foreign observers of this conflict, ones
whose tax dollars are used to fund the bombs being dropped indiscriminately, we
feel we must do something.
This
publication is the result of that feeling. We aim to use the power of art to
address the nuance of the situation, to build empathy for the Palestinian
struggle, and to shine a light onto the situation with the hopes of bringing
these emotions into the public conversation and affecting change. Most
importantly, we aim to use the power of art to protest and convey the
unconditional immorality of this situation. If you have strong feelings about
the war in Gaza or have produced artwork that grapples with this subject, then
this publication is for you. Furthermore, we want to emphasize our commitment
to elevating Palestinian voices in this collection. This collection seeks to
center the art and writing of Palestinian artists and bolster their voices with
the art of other communities and allies who stand with them in protest."

"Since the beginning of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in June 1982, the Institute for Palestine Studies has chronicled daily political and military events surrounding the Palestine Question. These day-by-day summaries are based on Palestinian, Arab, Israeli and international sources. Prior to August 2018, the chronology was published quarterly in the Journal of Palestine Studies. It is now updated monthly on this platform.
The platform features a full-text search engine. In addition, the entire content of the Chronology was tagged with the help of Dandelion API, in the framework of a partnership with IPS. These tags correspond to the most cited locations, organizations and persons, and can be used to efficiently filter our contents. "
"Nisma al-Sallaq, a local architect and a passionate advocate for the Palestinian enclave’s cultural history, set out to change that. Along with a growing team, al-Sallaq, 27, set up Gaza’s first digital archive of historical buildings and heritage sites when she launched a multi-dimensional platform called Kanaan in 2019. With a website, mobile application and Instagram page, the project provides visitors with information in text and video format in English and Arabic, and offers a virtual tour of Gaza’s centuries-old cultural history. This is a presentation of beautiful colored mosaics. They originate from buildings in the oasis of Jericho and all date from the first half of the eighth century, during the time of Umayyad caliphate of the early Islamic period. Many visitors have had the privilege of seeing the mosaics revealed, but no one has experienced the impact of all these pavements since they were first excavated in the 1930s and 1940s. A few have been published, but the presentation in Hamilton and Grabar (Khirbat al Mafjar: An Arabian Mansion in the Jordan Valley, 1959) is only very fine aquarelle paintings from the originals.
In 2010 the Department of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage uncovered, cleaned, and assessed the state of conservation of these mosaics. A series of high-quality digital photographs was prepared by a team from the Department, composed of M. Diab, N. Khatib, Said Ghazal, Rafaat Sharaia, and I. Hamdan, under the direction of H. Taha, from which the present selection is offered for study and appreciation of this triumph in early Islamic art. These images speak for themselves.
