Ba'th Party Records Collected by the Iraq Memory Foundation

More than ten million digitized page images and fifteen hundred video files collected by the Iraq Memory Foundation (IMF) from the Ba'th Regional Command headquarters and other sources are housed in the Hoover Archives. This vast array of digital files illuminates political conditions in, and governance of, Iraq during Saddam Hussein's regime.

The materials are divided into two collections according to origin. The larger collection, which consists of documents created by the Regional Command of the Hiẓb al-Ba'th al-'Arabī al-Ishtirākī (Ba'th Party) and other administrative and security agencies during the Ba'th Party’s reign in Iraq,  is accordingly titled the Hiẓb al-Ba'th al-'Arabī al-Ishtirākī records, 1968–2003. A smaller set of video files and printed matter was created by the IMF and other parties after the fall of the Ba'th Party and thus was assigned to a second collection, Iraq Memory Foundation issuances, 2003–2009. 

The Hiẓb al-Ba'th al-'Arabī al-Ishtirākī records contain digitized copies of correspondence, reports, membership and personnel files, judicial and investigatory dossiers, administrative files, school registers, and video recordings. The Iraq Memory Foundation issuances are chiefly videoed oral histories of survivors of Ba'th Party repression and, from Iraqi television, videoed proceedings of Saddam Hussein's trial before the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal.

The vast majority of the Ba'th Party records and all of the Iraq Memory Foundation issuances are open for research. Access is obtained via a custom portal on computer workstations in the Hoover Archives reading room, with some printed matter of the Iraq Memory Foundation available as hard copies. Researchers must sign a user agreement before being granted access to these collections. More information is available in the documents listed below.

Preserving the Iraqi Jewish Archive

Startling evidence of the once vibrant Jewish life in Iraq came to light in May 2003 — over 2,700 books and tens of thousands of documents were discovered in the flooded basement of the Iraqi intelligence headquarters by a US Army team. The remarkable survival of this written record of Iraqi Jewish life provides an unexpected opportunity to better understand this 2,500-year-old Jewish community. For centuries, it had flourished in what had generally been a tolerant, multicultural society. But circumstances changed dramatically for Jews in the mid-twentieth century, when most Iraqi Jews fled and were stripped of their citizenship and assets. To provide accessibility throughout the world to the damaged materials found in 2003, the US National Archives and Records Administration and its partners have preserved, cataloged, and digitized the books and documents.

"IASJ is one platform where all scholarly journals published by the Iraqi universities and research institutions are indexed and discovered. All journals in IASJ are peer-reviewed and open access.
The main aim of IASJ is to improve the online discoverability and visibility of and access to the published scholarly research of iraqi academics. IASJ will help Iraqi authors to disseminate their research globally.
At the moment IASJ is launched in a Beta version with only 71 journals published by 18 institutions. The service will be further developed and will cover all journals, more than 200 journals publisher by 40 academic institutions in Iraq."

The Marsh Arabs Heritage Project

The Marsh Arabs Heritage Project

The marshes of southern Iraq constitute a unique environment, and are of considerable environmental, cultural and economic importance. They have existed for hundreds of thousands of years and have, in the past, covered a significant area of southern Iraq. Their presence has brought numerous benefits to region, including cooling the local climate, providing irrigation and improving the fertility of the land. They have been a haven for plant and animal life.

Because of all this, the marshes have been home to a people—the Marsh Arabs. They are a people whose roots go back to the beginning of civilization. The AMAR International Charitable Foundation's heritage project has been working to help those people whose families left the marshes under the previous regime to reacquaint themselves with their home, history, culture and way of life. Furthermore, the project has sought to establish knowledge of, and respect for, the Marsh Arab people in the wider world. This book forms part of that latter endeavour.

This website is divided into four sections: History, Geography, Sociology and Economics; each written by a different Iraqi specialist.

TAARII Newsletter: The American Academic Research Institute in Iraq

The American Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TAARII — formerly the American Association for Research in Baghdad, AARB) has been established to promote scholarly research on and in Iraq and ancient Mesopotamia. The Institute, a consortium of American universities and museums, intends to establish a multidisciplinary American scholarly research center in Iraq when conditions permit. TAARII raises funds for graduate and post-graduate fellowships for Americans to work on Iraq in as broad a range of disciplines as possible. It also has a fellowship program for Iraqi academics to aid them in carrying out research in Iraq. TAARII initiates its own research projects and fosters joint projects between American and Iraqi academics. Like similar American overseas research centers, TAARII has as its primary focus the humanities and social sciences, as well as closely related natural sciences, but it will facilitate outstanding research in any legitimate academic field.

ANNOUNCEMENT

As readers may by aware, TAARII is committed to producing and printing a bilingual newsletter in English and in Arabic. Our September 2007 issue, sadly, was printed primarily in English (with Arabic to appear on the website). We regret that, beginning with the Spring 2008 issue, our newsletter is in printed in English only. We hope to seek funds for its Arabic translation for posting on our website and are actively seeking support for the ongoing cost of translation, so that we can continue printing a bilingual edition. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we raise the necessary funds.

Digitized by the staff of the Iraq National Library and Archives, Têgeyştinî Rastî is the first Kurdish-language content to appear on the World Digital Library, representing one of several "at-risk" newspapers digitally preserved for the benefit of current and future generations of scholars. From the Description: "Têgeyştinî Rastî (Understanding the truth) was a semiweekly newspaper published by the command of the British army in Iraq in 1918-19... The paper’s headquarters was in Baghdad, on present-day Nahr Street, in the same building as the Jareedet Al-Arab newspaper. The paper’s masthead contained no mention of the names of the owners, editor-in-chief, or editorial board, and articles were not published under bylines. It is known, however, that a Major Soane was the editor-in-chief, and that he prepared the entire paper for publication... The paper took a hostile stance toward the October Revolution in Russia; tried to appeal to tribal leaders, elders, and other leaders with influence in the Kurdish community; and depicted the British army as a liberator of the Kurds from Ottoman control. It promoted Kurdish literature and the poetry of Al-Haj Qadir Al-Koobi and Nali Rimhawi Ka, and it was the first Kurdish paper to write about the history and origins of the Kurdish people."

Ernst Herzfeld Papers

A foremost scholar in the field of Iranian studies, Ernst Herzfeld (1879–1948) explored all phases of Near Eastern culture from the prehistoric period to Islamic times. The collection documents Herzfeld's archaeological activities including Samarra, Persepolis, Pasargadae, Paikuli, and Aleppo and includes correspondence; field notebooks; drawings; sketchbooks; inventories of objects; squeezes of architectural inscriptions and details; and photographs.

Preservation, digitization, and cataloging has been made possible by the Leon Levy Foundation. The cataloging of this collection commenced in September 2009, and will be ongoing until Summer 2011. Please be advised that some of the Series and categories are not hot linked to images yet as we are in the process of making them available.

Cataloging and descriptions for the Ernst Herzfeld papers were created based on primary materials within the Ernst Herzfeld papers, notes and organization from Joseph Upton, and from secondary sources listed in the Ernst Herzfeld Resource Bibliography.

It is our hope that by providing the Ernst Herzfeld papers online we are contributing to the scholarship of, and interest in, the archaeological sites of the ancient Near East. We welcome additional insight and scholarship you may be able to add. If you hold, or know where related materials may be, please contact us so that we can maintain an up to date record of all Ernst Herzfeld resources.
