Mediterranea is an international journal focusing on various areas of knowledge transfer from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern period, covering the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin, and paying special attention to philological, philosophical, scientific, cultural and religious fields of research. Mediterranea publishes original papers relating to all aspects of the knowledge transfer from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern period. All submissions from Arts and Humanities, Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences and Experimental Sciences are welcome.

Digital Averroes Research Environment

Digital Averroes Research Environment

The Digital Averroes Research Environment (DARE) collects and edits the works of the Andalusian Philosopher Averroes or Abū l-Walīd Muḥammad Ibn Aḥmad Ibn Rušd, born in Cordoba in 1126, died in Marrakesh in 1198.

DARE makes accessible online digital editions of Averroes's works, and images of all textual witnesses, including manuscripts, incunabula, and early prints. Averroes's writings and the scholarly literature are documented in a bibliographical database.

At the same time, DARE is a research platform, giving scholars who work on Averroes the opportunity to present their research and to discuss questions related to Averroes's thought in the Forum. A collaborative, evolving, and open-ended project hosted by DARE is the Averroes Encyclopaedia, designed to document Averroes's philosophical, scientific and technical vocabulary.

Launched by the Thomas-Institut in February 2010, DARE will continue to evolve during the next years before reaching the complete documentation and digitization of Averroes's works that is intended. DARE is funded by DFG.

Tehran Branch of the Insitute of Islamic Studies, McGill University

"Academic cooperation between McGill University and the University of Tehran can be traced back to 1964, when Dr. Mehdi Mohaghegh, following a two year teaching position (1961-1962) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), was delegated by the University of Tehran to McGill’s Institute of Islamic Studies to teach Persian Language and Literature. During his time at the Institute (one of the first institutes of its kind in North America), Dr. Mohaghegh undertook the teaching of Shi`i Philosophy, Discourse, Mysticism, and Jurisprudence, fields not extensively studied in the west previously. It was during his time at McGill that Dr. Mohaghegh began to collaborate with Dr. Toshihiko Izutsu, a professor at the Institute, with whom he jointly published a number of texts in a series called “Wisdom of Persia” (Silsilah-i dānish-i Īrānī)."

The site currently includes ten of the Tehran Branch publications with many more to be added.The publications are predominantly on Iranian philosophy, history of science and literature.

Database of Islamic Medical and Scientific Ethics

Database of Islamic Medical and Scientific Ethics

The Islamic Medical and Scientific Ethics (IMSE) Project is a collaborative effort of two Georgetown Libraries, the Bioethics Research Library (Washington) and the School of Foreign Service-Qatar Library (Doha), to produce a comprehensive collection of resources pertaining to Islamic perspectives in the broad field of bioethics. The project staff has already collected over 1,700 relevant written works and compiled them into a searchable database.

This IMSE research guide shows users how to use the IMSE database effectively and educates them about the Islamic bioethics resources contained in the collection. As the project continues, this guide will be expanded with new materials and features. We invite you to check back often for updates.
