New OA Book: Intra-European Litigation in Eighteenth-Century Izmir

 

"Scholars have long debated the use of law to settle international trade disputes in the early modern period. In this book, Tijl Vanneste uses the case study of commercial litigation before the Dutch consular court of Izmir to argue that merchants relied on a particular blend of mercantile customs, which he calls ‘the merchants’ style’, and specific legal forms and procedures, laid down in written regulations, and dependent on local and international circumstances. The book challenges the idea of a universal ‘law merchant’, to replace it with a more nuanced analysis that centralizes the interplay between informal merchant custom, as advocated by traders and judges alike, and formal procedural legislation, drawn mostly from Roman law, in the resolution of mercantile disputes."

Imaging and Imagining Palestine is the first comprehensive study of photography during the British Mandate period (1918–1948). It addresses well-known archives, photos from private collections never available before and archives that have until recently remained closed. This interdisciplinary volume argues that photography is central to a different understanding of the social and political complexities of Palestine in this period.

While Biblical and Orientalist images abound, the chapters in this book go further by questioning the impact of photography on the social histories of British Mandate Palestine. This book considers the specific archives, the work of individual photographers, methods for reading historical photography from the present and how we might begin the process of decolonising photography.

Along with a growing team, al-Sallaq, 27, set up Gaza’s first digital archive of historical buildings and heritage sites when she launched a multi-dimensional platform called Kanaan in 2019. With a website, mobile application and Instagram page, the project provides visitors with information in text and video format in English and Arabic, and offers a virtual tour of Gaza’s centuries-old cultural history. New OA Database: “A World Beyond: Jewish Cemeteries in Turkey 1583-1990”

The computerized database, containing 61,022 Jewish tombstones from across Turkey, is the largest academic tombstone database of its kind in the world. The fruit of the labor of numerous individuals and bodies, its primary goals are to preserve the remnants of the gradually-disappearing Jewish life in Turkey, aid scholars to paint a broader and richer picture of the past, and enable interested laypersons to search for their roots.

New OA resource: Syrian Heritage Archive Project

Until now, a general register for Syrian cultural heritage has been lacking. Several Syrian and international initiatives are working together on a compilation of the abundant research data collected over the past decades within the framework of archaeological and art-historical projects, with the content made accessible for research via a national Syrian Heritage register.

In 2013, the Museum of Islamic Art (National Museums in Berlin) and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) started the “Project for the Establishment of a Digital Heritage Register for Syria”/“Projekt zur Erstellung digitaler Kulturgüterregister für Syrien”. This original name was soon replaced by a shorter English version: “Syrian Heritage Archive Project”, commonly abbreviated as SyrHer or SHAP. From the very beginning, the project was funded by the Cultural Preservation Program maintained by the German Foreign Office.

This website is the responsibility of the subteam of the Museum of Islamic Art.

A detailed documentation of Syria’s cultural heritage provides a basis for recording damage and destruction from the war and for possible future reconstruction measures. The awareness of a common cultural heritage may become an important component for national reconciliation processes in the future.

"Increasingly, primary sources from the period before the emergence of digital media are being digitized. These “digital surrogates” have facilitated the work of (historical) researchers; instead of having to visit several archives, libraries and other places, the (primary) sources appear in front of them on their screen while they are sitting in their study at home or the university."

Select historical Turkish newspapers collection from Istanbul University

Istanbul University recently began a historical newspaper project in which they digitized newspapers dating from 1928-1942 and made them freely accessible.

"Gazeteden Tarihe Bakış Projesi
İstanbul Üniversitesi Kütüphane ve Dokümantasyon Daire Başkanlığı, Merkez Kütüphane koleksiyonunda yaklaşık 18422 adet cilt gazete yer almaktadır. Gazeteler Osmanlıca, Rumca, Bulgarca, Fransızca, Almanca, İngilizce, Türkçe gibi çeşitli dillerde yayınlanmıştır. Dönemin tarihine ışık tutacak nitelikteki bu değerli gazete arşivinin korunması ve araştırmacıların hizmetine sunulması için “Gazeteden Tarihe Bakış Projesi” gerçekleştirilmiştir. Proje kapsamında, günlük erişilebilir şekilde ve OCR metodu ile 1928-1942 yıllarını kapsayan yaklaşık 688 cilt, 55 başlık ulusal ve yerel gazeteden 581106 sayfa görüntü taranmış ve elektronik ortama aktarılmış durumdadır, çalışma devam etmektedir."

Historiography of Early Modern Ottoman Europe (HOE) Database

HOE is a collection of meta-data focusing on historiographical writing of Early Modern Ottoman Europe (1500-1800). It brings together published and unpublished primary sources (chronicles, histories, hagiographies, inscriptions, maps…), as well as secondary material (“Main Section”). It also offers information on specific collections, as well as a wide variety of references to tools and resources useful to those navigating the research questions of Early Modern historiography (“Tools Section”).

HOE provides information on the author(s), title(s), contents, manuscript(s) and edition(s) of the main sources related to the topic. Regarding these sources, it offers bibliographical meta-data in the form of both library-specific and internationally recognized identifiers. This information is augmented by links to online resources and related literature. Thus, HOE allows for quick and comprehensive overview of where to find primary sources, who was/is connected to their generation and proliferation, which secondary sources in which editions, printed and online there are, etc.… It is a research tool for easy, comprehensive, quality reference.

You can switch between the Main Section and the Tool Section at will. Different facets and filters will help you refine your search.

If you are looking for specific works, you can use the search function to find its title, transcribed title or translated title. In each entry, different pieces of related information and links are made available, depending on the type of source you have selected. And in every case, there will be links to its related sources, which allow you to quickly and precisely access a source’s siblings or derivates.

"This project, a collaboration between İstanbul Atatürk Library, Bibliothèque Nationale de France and Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes, aims to digitize newspapers and magazines published in French from the second half of the 19th century to the 1930s. More than a hundred titles, including periodicals printed in the Ottoman Empire as well as media published by the Young Turks of Europe, are now accessible. İstanbul Atatürk Library’s collection of Franco-Ottoman press has been digitalized by SALT Research, while the collection of Bibliothèque Nationale de France can be accessed through Gallica."
