Open Access Journal: Transeuropéennes

Transeuropéennes:  International Journal of Critical Thought
Transeuropéennes/assemblée pour traduire entre les cultures is a registered non-profit association, governed by the French law of 1901 with respect to associations. In the continuity with the projects developed by Transeuropéennes since 1993, its purpose is to bring together in an open co-operation network individuals, organisations or institutions whose aim it is to develop, promote and disseminate the concept and practices of translating, understood to cover modes of representation, the imaginary, as well as languages and “regimes of speech”.

This interdisciplinary notion of "translating, between cultures", developed above all by Transeuropéennes since 1999, has a crucial role to play as an alternative to currently dominant ideologies. This concept is likely to create new dynamics related to the formal acknowledgement of cultural diversity, and to renew intercultural reflection and action in the contemporary world and for the future.

As a travelling project and/or as a project anchored in a place open to a public audience as well as to research, the association runs international cultural cooperation programmes, organise training programmes, research and translation workshops and residencies, conferences, seminars.

It produces or co-produces tools for knowledge, training and anc communication as a contribution for the emergence of new knowledge. It produces or co-produces and disseminates intellectual and artistic works, of various forms, including the international journal Transeuropéennes and any related publishing project.

Open Access Journal: Nafas Art Magazine: Contemporary Art from the Maghreb to the Middle East, from Central Asia to SE Asia

Since March 2003, this online magazine has presented articles, information, and visual material on current art whose essential point of origin or reference is in the Islamic world. Of course, this also includes the work of artists who live elsewhere, but who see their cultural home in countries and regions shaped by Islam. To prevent misunderstandings: this publication is not about "Islamic" art.

Until it was renamed "Nafas. Art Magazine" in February 2007, this online magazine was titled "Contemporary Art from the Islamic World". In full consciousness of its questionability, the editors took up a widely used term that suggests a generalizing view of the countries and regions that have a majority Muslim population. In this way, we wanted to speak to stereotypical ideas in order to counter them by confronting them with works by artists who do not fit the usual clichés. It has been repeatedly underscored – and in the course of the years also demonstrated with articles and works – that the point of this project is to foster not only a differentiated perception of artistic practices, but also of the complex reality of life in the "Islamic world". This is primarily done by presenting a large number of individual artistic positions behind which a broad range of personal, cultural, religious, social, and other contexts become visible. While the strategy of using the first title functioned quite well as far as the audience in the "West" is concerned, it sometimes caused uneasiness, specially among artists who did not want to be categorized by a label tied to a religion...

A Call to Protect Egyptian Antiquities, Cultural Heritage and Tourism Economy

A Call to Protect Egyptian Antiquities
A Call to Protect Egyptian Antiquities, Cultural Heritage and Tourism Economy

We, the undersigned, strongly urge immediate action to protect Egyptian antiquities, important sites, and cultural heritage. In so doing, significant archaeological artifacts and irreplaceable historic objects will be preserved. Importantly, such protection will help the Egyptian economy in the wake of political revolution. Such an initiative will also help stem illicit international crime organizations that have links to money laundering, human trafficking and the drug trade.

Whereas, Egyptian antiquities and sites are among the most historically significant and important in the world,

Whereas, Egypt has numerous museums and historical sites, some of which are victims of ongoing looting, including recent reports that artifacts originally from Tutankhamen’s tomb have been stolen,

Whereas, more than 50 ancient Egyptian artifacts have been reported stolen from the Cairo Museum alone,

Whereas, UNESCO has called for international mobilization to block cultural artifacts stolen from Egypt,

Whereas, the tourism industry in Egypt is closely tied to cultural expeditions, employs one in eight Egyptians, accounts for some $11 billion in revenue for the Egyptian economy, and is the one of the largest sectors of the Egyptian economy...
