İstanbul Ansiklopedisi: Reşad Ekrem Koçu

"A joint project initiated by Salt and Kadir Has University in 2018, istanbulansiklopedisi.org offers access to the printed volumes of Reşad Ekrem Koçu’s Istanbul Encyclopedia and thousands of related documents. It brings together over 40,000 digitized documents, incorporating published encyclopedia articles and a body of archival material that forms the basis for subsequent volumes. Enabling an in-depth analysis of the archive, the online platform provides a basis to trace and explore the visual and textual connections between various sources.

Blending common facts with unusual accounts, the Istanbul Encyclopedia —and the relevance of the knowledge it entails— is worthy of further scrutiny."

Published: Istanbul: Netherlands Institute in Turkey, 2023
ISBN : 9786057259004

"What are the ways that industrial heritage places are transformed, both considering their tangible and intangible values as well as their potential to achieve urban inclusivity, sustainability, circularity as well as public engagement?

The present book is one of the outcomes of the inaugural program of NIT Urban Heritage Lab. Following an introduction on the course, its scope and aims, it showcases the four proposals that the participants of the Industrial Heritage for Sustainable Cities Course developed for the transformation of the Unkapanı Flour Mill. The proposals are original, thought-provoking and inspirational, while at the same time based on solid multi-disciplinary, collaborative work. So, they are perfect demonstrations of what NIT Urban Heritage Lab tries to achieve.

"Diplomatic gifts, war prizes, or library treasures of royal and princely libraries—handwritten Qurʾans have also been endowed to mosques, tombs, and other religious complexes to perpetuate and transmit their baraka (divine blessing). Artistic, historic, and religious contexts and materiality of Qurʾans are investigated, from use of costly materials such as gold and parchment to development of special scripts, intricate illuminated designs, and meticulously tooled bindings. This edited collection resulted from a 2016 symposium at the Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sacker Gallery in conjunction with the exhibition The Art of the Qurʾan: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts."

A Bibliography of Armistice-Era Istanbul, 1918–1923, BIAA

"A Bibliography of Armistice-Era Istanbul, 1918–1923

With more than 1400 primary and secondary sources, this bibliography is the first comprehensive guide for the study of Istanbul during its occupation by British, French and Italian forces from 1918 to 1923. The book contributes to efforts to restore to prominence the history of the city during these years, which has been largely ignored by historians in the former occupying powers, and often marginalised in the Anatolia-focused history of the War of Independence in Turkey. Prefaced by an essay outlining changing public and academic perspectives on the occupied city, the bibliography features materials organised into seven categories including archives, contemporary publications, memoirs, articles, books, book chapters and theses. Compiled with the collaboration of diverse specialists in the history of the many resident communities of late Ottoman Istanbul, the bibliography provides guidance to sources available in a variety of languages, including Turkish, Armenian, Greek, Ladino, Arabic, French, Italian, English and Russian. This bibliography is an essential tool and reference work for historians, social scientists, and all those interested in modern Istanbul and its place within Turkish, Middle Eastern, European and imperial history. As an increasingly interested public mark the centenaries of events connected to the occupation and evacuation of the city, the book aims to facilitate further transnational and transcommunal work on this crucial period."

Open Access E-book: A Sultan in Autumn: Erdogan Faces Turkey's Uncontainable Forces

"The unprecedented economic growth and personal popularity once enjoyed by the Turkish leader have given way to stagnation, a dwindling support base, and problems abroad.

During his first decade in power, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan maintained his popularity by delivering unprecedented economic growth and dramatically increasing access to healthcare, education, and other essential services. But in recent years, he and his party have faced setbacks, including humiliating mayoral election losses in Istanbul, Ankara, and other major cities in 2019. At home, the once robust Turkish economy has sputtered, while abroad Erdogan must balance a perilous alliance with Russia’s Vladimir Putin against the need to maintain amicable relations with Washington. A potential refugee crisis from Syria looms as another threat. And on the political front, Erdogan can no longer count on majority support from Turkish voters, a trend driven by disillusionment among millennials, his own clumsy anti-elitist messaging, and establishment fatigue, among other factors.

In this taut and compelling volume—copublished by The Washington Institute and I.B. Tauris—Soner Cagaptay lays out the mounting challenges to Erdogan’s rule. While suggesting the adaptive president may still survive politically—with undoubted costs for Turkey’s citizens, institutions, and allies—he also offers a more hopeful subtext, intimating that the country’s resilient democracy can outlast any one leader."

New OA Journal: Ecocene: Cappadocia Journal of Environmental Humanities

"Ecocene: Cappadocia Journal of Environmental Humanities is a digital, open-access, peer-reviewed, international, and transdisciplinary journal of the Environmental Humanities. It is a biannual journal, publishing a Winter issue in December and a Summer issue in June. It aims to develop new insights and theories about the current material and conceptual challenges in the field. Since the complexities and questions raised by ecological and social changes, as well as pressures from global climatic crises, demand interrelated re-workings of humanities disciplines and social and natural sciences, the journal invites submissions that transcend disciplinary categories, allowing us to rethink and reimagine the human-nonhuman relationalities on our damaged planet to ensure a livable future. It will thus seek articles that move beyond species-centered parameters and contest anthropocentric conceptions of reality. Recognizing the relevance and value of deep time experiences of social, cultural and environmental changes, Ecocene addresses the present and future challenges facing our planet. The journal also invites new Anthropocene stories, poetry, artwork and other creative works that advance our cognitive, imaginative and ethical capabilities. The purpose of Ecocene therefore is to create a space for transdisciplinary research and new modes of knowledge in what Donna Haraway calls “collaborative” but also “competitive entanglements” of human-nonhuman worlds."

Digital Sources for the Study of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey

Digital Sources for the Study of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey.
by Nicole A.N.M. van Os, PhD

"Increasingly, primary sources from the period before the emergence of digital media are being digitized. These “digital surrogates” have facilitated the work of (historical) researchers; instead of having to visit several archives, libraries and other places, the (primary) sources appear in front of them on their screen while they are sitting in their study at home or the university."

Anatoli: De l’Adriatique à la Caspienne. Territoires, Politique, Sociétés
ISSN électronique 2498-0730
Couverture Anatoli N°6 - 2015
